Obedience in Dogs: My Take On The Topic

Episode Summary

In this episode, I chat about obedience in dogs and explain why I’m not a fan of the term.

Instead of expecting obedience, I like to focus on achieving a harmonious relationship with my dogs. In my opinion, the best results come when communication is two-way.

Expecting compliance no matter what can sometimes lead to impressive-looking results of a well-behaved and perfectly obedient dog. But, does it take into account the experience the dog is having?

Naturally, when dogs live as pets we have a significant amount of control over their world. So, I always aim to take into account the experience my dogs are having and wherever possible ensure it’s a good one.

I want to set them up for success in life alongside me and help them learn to behave appropriately in a given situation. But, if they’re experiencing a negative emotional state (fear, anxiety, pain, discomfort, frustration, confusion etc.), I also want to allow them to communicate and express this safely. This means I can help them and improve the situation for all involved.

Sometimes, lessening expectations of having a perfectly obedient dog can lead to increased awareness of how your dog is experiencing the world around them. Then, you can develop two-way communication.

It might not always yield instant and impressive results, but it’s totally possible to achieve long-term training or behaviour change success and also take into account how your dog is feeling.
